Debapriya Bhattacharya, Honorary Fellow of the non-governmental research organization Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD), said that there were many expectations about the budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year. But the budget of expectations has turned into a budget of disappointment.

Devapriyo Bhattacharya said that the interim government got the opportunity to formulate the budget through a major political change. But the budget did not meet those expectations. The budget came without the approval of the Advisory Council (Cabinet).

Debapriya Bhattacharya said these things at a multi-stakeholder meeting titled ‘National Budget 2025-26: What have the neglected got’ organized by the Citizen Platform at a hotel in Gulshan, the capital, on Wednesday.

At the beginning of the program, Selim Raihan, Executive Director of private research organization SANEM, said, ‘The proposed budget can be called a budget of missed opportunities. I can see a big gap between expectations and achievements in the budget. The main problem is that an attempt has been made to provide something new within the framework of the old budget. The goals that have been set in the budget are not realistic.’

Selim Raihan also said that there is not only internal but also global uncertainty. But there is no reflection of this in the budget. There has been some restructuring in the social security sector, but no major restructuring has been seen.

The allocation for the education and health sectors is also very low. However, there was an opportunity to do something different in the budget this time.

CPD Honorary Fellow Mostafizur Rahman said, ‘It is being said that the proposed budget is a budget of lost opportunities. However, I would say that this year’s budget is a “lost opportunity”. But because it is a traditional budget, we became weak.’
